Adopting a Healthier Lifestyle in St. Petersburg, Florida: A Personal Update
It's been one week since my family and I made the significant move from rural Washington state to downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. This transition has been quite a change, moving from a spacious home on five acres to a smaller condominium in a lively urban setting. In this blog post, I want to share my experiences thus far, the pros and cons of condo living, and how this new environment aligns with my health and wellness goals.
Why the Move?
Many have questioned why we would leave our rural home for a downtown lifestyle. The decision was driven by several factors, including the policies and climate in Washington state and my wife's desire to be closer to her family in France. Additionally, Florida has been on our radar for about five years, especially as I approach my sixties and begin to consider retirement, although I have no plans to stop working anytime soon.
Embracing the Florida Climate
The Florida heat has been a welcome change for me. On July 3rd, I found myself enjoying a run on the pier, despite the 90°F temperature and humidity. Growing up on the Texas Gulf Coast, I have always thrived in warmer climates. The sunshine here is abundant, with St. Petersburg being one of the sunniest places on Earth, boasting a record of over 700 consecutive sunny days. This exposure to sunlight not only boosts my mood but is also supported by scientific research linking sunlight to improved mental health.
The Benefits of Condo Living
Living in a condominium offers a different lifestyle than my previous rural home. The walkability of St. Petersburg has allowed me to integrate more physical activity into my daily routine. With grocery stores, parks, and waterfronts just blocks away, I find myself walking several times a day. I appreciate this change, as it promotes a more active lifestyle compared to my past where getting into the car was necessary for most errands.
Fitness Facilities and Training Goals
Although the condominium has a decent gym, I find myself missing my home gym where I could perform Olympic lifting. As I turn 60, I am increasingly interested in track and field and hope to compete in the decathlon. The warm climate allows for year-round outdoor training, although I have encountered some challenges with access to local tracks, which are often locked after school hours.
Community and Lifestyle
One of the more enjoyable aspects of living in St. Petersburg is the vibrant community. The city is alive with people, and I’ve had the chance to meet fellow fitness enthusiasts while running sprints at the pier. This social aspect of exercise is something I cherish; it’s not just about working out alone anymore. Plus, the overall friendliness of the residents has made our transition smoother.
Conclusion: A Positive Transition
So far, the move to St. Petersburg has been a big thumbs up for my family and me. We are enjoying the warm climate, the active lifestyle, and the vibrant community around us. I hope to continue sharing my journey and perhaps inspire others to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Remember, healthier people contribute to a happier society. If you're in the area, feel free to say hello or join me for a run on the pier!
